The screening of the film “Um novo Lar” (A New Home) last Thursday brought hundreds of movie lovers to Cine Esmeralda. The film won the Curumim award for the best short film at the Marília Film Festival 2023. The screening was charitable and collected food that will be donated to the Lotus Institute.

The event was organized by the Audiovisual Center of Marília and Region, Aiko Filmes production with the support of the Pedrinhas Paulista City Hall, Tatá Comunicação, Pierucci Studios, Moruga Comunicação, and Aluf Pictures.

The Marília Film Festival took place in November and marked the return of an event that had been traditional in the city for many years. The festival received 111 submitted films from all regions of Brazil and four countries, including documentaries and fictional narratives.

The short film “Um novo Lar” is a romance based on real stories with a duration of 32 minutes. It tells the story of Francesca, a young woman who, against her will, leaves the love of her life behind. She goes with her family in search of a new perspective on life in Brazil, in a town called Pedrinhas Paulista, in the interior of São Paulo, which they help build.

Francesca represents thousands of Italian immigrants in the mid-1950s who, due to unfavorable post-war conditions, whole families moved from their homeland in search of a new home. The film also features fun and emotional testimonies from real immigrants who came from Italy in the 1950s and 1960s.

Otávio Ribeiro, director of Tatá Comunicação and responsible for the editing and post-production of the film, states that the screening of the film was a success, and people were very motivated by the prospect of Marília returning to have a strong cultural cinema movement with the resumption of the festival.

He explains that the film “Um Novo Lar” will now have a festival career and for two years cannot have public release on any platform, only closed screenings.
